The Morvan was a region popular with the Maquis resistance. Its relative isolation - though not far away, no major trunk roads pass through the region - made it the ideal refuge for those fleeing the repression of occupied France and who wanted to continue the struggle for freedom.
The deep wooded valleys of the Morvan countryside provided ideal hiding places near to hamlets or remote self-sufficient farms, where information and food were easy to find. The geography and administrative situation of the Morvan, on the borders of the four Burgundy departments, helped hold off repression for a long time and favoured the expansion of the maquis.
The memory of this painful period is honoured by the museum, a joint effort of historians at the University of Burgundy, of people who were active or witnesses at the time and of a museum designer commissioned by the secretary of state for war veterans. “Shadows and light” guide the visitor trough the museum, supported by new technologies and audioguides in english, french and dutch.
Pay also a visit to the Espace Saint-Brisson, the herbularium, the arboretum, the conservatory orchard, the pedagical footpaths, the tourist office with its bookshop and local products, the house of Men and Landscapes (reduced price pass with the museum of Résistance.
